Planning Your Stay: Check-In, Parking and House Rules
The practical details that make arrival smooth, from who can check in to where the boat trailer cannot go.

Who can book and who checks in
Start with the rule that surprises people most. To reserve a room at Tamarack Lodge of Traverse City, the person booking must be at least 21 and hold a valid credit card. At check-in, the reservation holder has to be there in person with a valid photo ID, the same credit card and payment in full. Sending a friend ahead with the confirmation email will not work, so if you are driving separately, make sure the reservation holder is the one who walks into the lobby.
Check-in is at 4 PM and check-out is at 10:30 AM. The Main Lodge lobby has guest services 24 hours a day, so a late arrival is not a problem. Two guests in recent reviews were pleasantly surprised when their rooms were ready early. Treat that as luck rather than a promise, and plan your first afternoon around the beach, the pool or a lunch downtown so the wait for 4 PM feels like part of the trip.
Check-out at 10:30 AM comes earlier than many hotels, so pack the night before. The beverage station is open around the clock with coffee, tea and hot chocolate, which makes a slow last morning easier to take.
Parking and what cannot come along
Parking is complimentary and covers one space per room, unit or suite. That is simple for a couple and takes thought for a family reunion in a three-bedroom suite with several vehicles. If your group is driving more cars than you have rooms, ask the reservations team how to handle it before you arrive rather than in the lot.
- No RVs, trailers or oversized vehicles in guest parking.
- No boat, trailer or jet ski parking.
- No boat launch on the property. The lodge recommends TC Watersports for getting on the water.
If boating is part of your plan, sort it out first. Tamarack Lodge sits on the shore of East Bay, but the shore here is for the beach, not for launching, so build your boat day around TC Watersports and treat the lodge as the place you come back to.
House rules, in plain language
- 100% pet-free, so leave the dog at home.
- 100% smoke-free, including vaping, e-cigarettes and marijuana.
- Amenities are for registered guests only.
- No lifeguard at the pool or the beach, so supervise children yourself.
- Quiet hours run from 11 to 7, which one recent guest said they appreciated.
None of these is meant to be fussy. Pet-free and smoke-free keep the rooms clean for the next family, and quiet hours mean the person in the next room sleeps. Guest Rylie wrote of the front desk, "The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly." Staff who are friendly about the rules make them easier to follow.
Traveling with little ones
The lodge does not provide cribs, pack-and-plays or roll-aways. For baby gear, the lodge points guests to babyquip.com, which is worth arranging before you leave home. Rooms and suites with a sofa sleeper or two queens handle older children well, and every suite has an in-unit washer and dryer if you are traveling with toddler laundry. The private beach is a hit with kids, but remember the lifeguard note above.
Cancellations and booking direct
The cancellation policy depends on the rate type you book and the platform you booked through, so the honest answer is to read your confirmation email. That email is the source of truth for your stay, not a general rule of thumb. Booking direct with the lodge keeps the Best Rate Guarantee in play, and changes, modifications and upgrades may not be available if you booked through a third party. If your plans might shift, that flexibility is worth weighing before you click.
A short checklist before you drive up
- Reservation holder is 21 or older and carrying photo ID and the booking credit card.
- Vehicle count matches your room count, and nothing oversized is coming along.
- Baby gear arranged through babyquip.com if you need it.
- Boat plans made with TC Watersports, not the lodge.
- Confirmation email saved where you can reach it, cancellation terms included.
Questions that fall outside the list can go to the reservations team at Tamarack Lodge on (231) 938-9744, or by email at reservations@tamaracklodgetc.com. A two-minute conversation before arrival is cheaper than a surprise at the front desk, and it leaves you free to spend your first evening where you came to spend it: on the shore of East Grand Traverse Bay.
