Choosing Your Room Type at Tamarack Lodge

Start with the word Lakeview

Before you compare beds and balconies, learn the one naming rule that clears up the most confusion. At Tamarack Lodge, if a room type's name includes the word Lakeview, that room or suite has a view of the bay. If the name leaves it out, the view is not the water. Not every room faces East Grand Traverse Bay, and the names are honest about it, so read them literally when you book.

The lodge offers two kinds of stays under one roof: hotel rooms, and condominium suites that can be booked by the night. Every hotel room comes with an electric fireplace, an HD TV, complimentary WiFi and access to every resort amenity. All rooms and suites are smoke-free, and none are pet-friendly. Past that, the differences come down to where a room sits in the building and how much space your group needs.

The four hotel rooms

  • Lakeview Walkout Room: ground floor with direct outdoor access and a private lakefront patio, one king or two queens, soaker spa tub.
  • Lakeview Balcony Room: a higher floor with a private balcony over the bay, one king or two queens, soaker spa tub.
  • Standard Room: south side of the building with city views, one king or two queens, soaker spa tub.
  • ADA Accessible King Room: south side, barrier-free layout, one king bed, roll-in shower and city views.

Choose the walkout if you like the idea of coffee outside your own door and an easy way out to the grounds with kids or a cooler in tow. Choose the balcony if you would rather be higher up, looking out over the bay from above. Both have the water in front of them. The difference is height and access, so decide which of those you will actually use.

The Standard Room and the ADA Accessible King sit on the south side, and city views are the trade. You give up the bay outlook and keep everything else: the same beach, the same pool, the same lobby and the same location. If your plan is out all day and asleep early, this is a sensible choice. If you need the accessible room, call the reservations line and talk it through with a person rather than relying on a booking screen alone.

The condominium suites

The suites are privately owned condominiums, one of 29 privately owned units shared among over 200 families in the lodge's condominium association, and they are available for nightly stays. Each one has separate living and sleeping areas, a kitchen, a private balcony or patio and a sofa sleeper. They run from one to three bedrooms.

  • Lakeview One Bedroom Corner Suite: added privacy, panoramic bay views and a west-facing shoreline for sunsets, with a king bedroom and a walk-in shower.
  • Lakeview One Bedroom Suite: a bay-facing one-bedroom with a king and a shower-tub combination with jets, suited to couples and families.
  • Lakeview Two Bedroom Suite: two private bedrooms, each with a king.
  • Lakeview Three Bedroom Suite: the largest suite at the lodge, three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a king in every bedroom.

Here is the kitchen truth, because it changes how you plan meals. The two one-bedroom suites have a kitchen with a two-burner cooktop and no oven. The two- and three-bedroom suites list a fully furnished kitchen. Every suite has an in-unit washer and dryer and a TV in the living room and each bedroom. The hotel room listings do not mention a kitchen at all, so if cooking matters to you, look at the suites first. A one-bedroom suite handles pasta, stir-fry and breakfast just fine. It will not roast a chicken.

Guest Michaela stayed in a two bedroom suite in the off season and put it this way: "Loved the soaker tub next to the bed." She also mentioned the wood trim and fireplace giving the place a cabin feel, which fits the lodge's look.

Matching the room to your trip

For a couple, the corner suite is the one to look at if privacy and sunsets are the point. A Lakeview Walkout or Balcony Room is plenty of room if the trip is mostly about the bay and a good bath. For a family with children, a one-bedroom suite gives you a king bedroom plus a sofa sleeper and a kitchen to handle breakfast. Two couples traveling together fit well in a two-bedroom suite, since each bedroom has its own king. A family reunion or a group of friends belongs in the three-bedroom suite, or in several rooms booked together as a group block.

A few practical items before you commit. Parking is complimentary, with one space per room, unit or suite, so a full house arriving in four cars needs a plan. The lodge does not provide cribs, pack-and-plays or roll-aways, and it suggests babyquip.com for baby gear rental. For groups, the lodge hosts family reunions, birthday celebrations, wellness weekends and company retreats, with meeting space for up to 50 people, and the sales team answers at sales@tamaracklodgetc.com.

When you are ready, call Tamarack Lodge reservations at (231) 938-9744, tell them who is coming and how everyone will sleep, and pick the room type that matches. Booking direct also keeps the lodge's Best Rate Guarantee in play.
